Reforestation, Food Forests and Carbon Offsets

Since 2001 More than 600,000 Maya Nut trees have been planted by communities in areas where we work. These trees will eventually provide food security for people and wildlife and will dramatically improve living conditions for the people fortunate enough to live near these forests.

PEOPLE WANT TO PLANT MAYA NUT TREES

Maya Nut is an excellent species for agroforestry systems

Maya Nut can be planted in dense rows for production of forage for goats, cattle, mules and horses.

It produces up to 800kg/tree/yr of high protein forage even in the dry season.

Leaves and stems contain from 20%-30% crude protein and dairy cattle fed Maya Nut leaves produce up to two liters extra milk per day!

In Guatemala in 2009, we worked with local cattle ranchers to establish 300 acres of Maya Nut demonstration plots for cattle ranchers to observe Maya Nut plantations as an alternative to pasture.

Animals love Maya Nut leaves and stems
