In May the Maya Nut program was awarded the prestigious St. Andrews Prize for the Environment. The $50,000 prize money represents more than The Equilibrium Fund has spent in the past 5 years and is earmarked for educating more women in more villages throughout Central America, with special focus on the Atlantic Rainforest of Nicaragua.
"It is an enormous honor to be chosen for this award, especially considering the qualifications of the other finalists and the selection committee", said Executive Director, Erika Vohman.
The two other finalist projects were the PURE Project, from Unst Scotland, the world's first community owned renewable energy hydrogen plant and the Kanchan Arsenic Filter, an appropriate technology water filter which removes arsenic, bacteria and viruses from household drinking water in Nepal.
